Frequently Asked Questions

How do I prepare for my Initial Assessment?

Once you book an appointment you will be emailed a number of forms and questionnaires that I request you complete at home prior to your initial assessment. I make this request as it enables me to gain an in-depth understanding of your symptoms and use our time together more efficiently and effectively.

What should I expect for my Initial Assessment?

At your first physical therapy visit, I will discuss your concerns and goals, followed by a physical assessment. Depending on the concerns, not all of the physical assessment may be completed on the first visit. The physical assessment may include an assessment of your low back, pelvic joints, hip joints, connective tissue of the abdomen and thighs and a gentle internal vaginal and rectal exam An internal exam (pelvic exam) is necessary in order to accurately assess the pelvic floors strength, tension, areas of pain, coordination and length. One cannot see the pelvic floor muscles externally as they are hidden inside the pelvis. The pelvic floor muscles allow us to function by assisting with bladder, bowel and sexual function, and decreases low back pain by contributing to our core strength. Research has shown that only way to assess the pelvic floor muscles is through an internal exam and it is the gold standard of pelvic floor assessment.  If you had a sore throat and went to see your family physician, you would expect him/her to look inside your mouth to assess your throat.  Treating your sore throat without inspecting it is unacceptable.

After the examination, I will provide you with an understanding of your pelvic floor and how we can achieve your goals. An individualized timeline and home-based exercises will be provided so you can start on your recovery process.

Why are there so many questions about my mental health on the intake forms?

I treat all my patients using a biopsychosocial approach. Pain is defined as both a “sensory” and an “emotional” experience. I cannot adequately treat your condition without addressing both aspects of pain. By completing these questionnaires, I am gathering important information that will influence our treatment plan based on your stress, anxiety, and other factors. Please leave any questions blank if you feel they are not relevant.

Do You Bill My Insurance Company Directly?

Pelvic Physio Niagara now offers direct billing to insurance providers. Please bring your benefit card with you to your appointment to determine if Direct Billing is an option.

If your extended health insurance plan does not allow direct billing, you will be required to pay after each visit. All major credit cards, debit cards, cash and e-transfers are accepted
